At baseline using specific primers, L. fermentum ME-3 was found in samples originating from 10 individuals. In control and probiotic study groups the prevalence of probiotic lactobacilli was similar at the beginning (9% versus 8%). In probiotic group the prevalence increased (at 4 weeks 62%; p < 0.001 and at 8 weeks 56%; p < 0.001).
